Laser eye surgery risks- be informed
Laser eye surgery is a fast growing subject both in terms of technology and popularity among patients. However, consumer experts are of the opinion that patients who are opting for laser eye surgery are not being fully apprised by the doctors about the related risks of the surgery. This surgery is seen by most patients as a quick fix solution to their vision woes and with celebrity endorsements to boot, people are rushing to avail its benefits without going thoroughly into every aspect of the surgery.
Risk factors: there are different perceptions about laser eye surgery risks and they vacillate between non-existent to relatively low risk. There are however, in some rare cases the risks of complications arising which may cause corneal ectasia in which fluid pressure mounts in the eye and patients may require a corneal transplant. This is a serious laser eye surgery risk.
Some minor laser eye surgery risks are dry eyes or problems related to night vision that may prevent driving or working in the evening and low-lighted conditions. Since the effect of these surgeries have not been known for long, there are not adequate studies to help evaluate the actual laser eye surgery risks.
Patients may feel a certain amount of discomfort and have blurred vision for a few days after laser eye surgery. However, these are not serious problems. Common laser eye surgery risks are lasik and damage to the corneal flap, PRK and infection, under correction, night vision problems, no improvement in condition as well as long-term complications.
In lasik, the laser eye surgery risk is very low, being one in five hundred. The chance of damage to the cornea due to surgery as well as the need to cut the corneal flap is very slight. The risk rate for under correction and need for resurgery is 6%. However, night vision problems have a higher rate of occurrence, being anywhere between 4-30%.
