PRK and lasik laser eye treatments
One can well imagine the freedom that laser eye treatment gives to people who have suffered the inconvenience of reading glasses or contact lenses for years. Not being able to see clearly while playing sports, the mind being more focussed on not breaking the glasses than playing with the kids or encountering vision difficulties while swimming will all be things of the past if one takes recourse to laser eye treatment.
Laser eye treatment is a surgical procedure that corrects many vision disorders like nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
There are 2 types of laser eye surgical procedures that can be tried on individuals.
Photo refractive keratectomy (PRK):
This is a surgery performed in an outpatient laser eye treatment clinic. A local anaesthesia in the form of eye drops is given and then the cornea is reshaped. This reshaping is accomplished by the surgical removal of miniscule amounts of tissue using an ultra violet light beam. The success of this laser eye treatment is based upon the preciseness of the process and its ability to remove tissue to billionth of an inch. Also, the reshaping of the cornea is not done arbitrarily but by precise methods of measurement of the corneal tissue to be removed. These measurements are then fed into the laser’s computer for the precise extraction of the tissue. Most often, a patient can return to normal activities in 1-3 days after PRK.
Lasik:
This is a more complicated method of laser eye treatment requiring the use of a surgical knife.
In lasik eye surgery, the surgeon cuts a thin circular flap in the cornea using a surgical knife. The flap is then folded back and the laser beams are used to remove a part of the exposed tissue. This structurally reforms the cornea so that the light entering the eyes is focussed accurately on the retina.
Lasik laser eye treatment is advised to those patients suffering from greater refractive defects and after lasik surgery there is remarkable improvement in the eyesight of the patient.
